What makes a school special? For Summer, a teacher at our school, the answer is woven through her own story. She once sat in our classrooms as a student. Today, she stands at the front of one, helping the next generation of Sunshiners discover what they can achieve.
For State Education Week, themed Great Stories Start Here, Summer’s journey is a reminder that the impact of a school can last long after the final school bell.
Summer attended SBSS from Year 2 to Year 7, graduating in 2008. Her memories include fossicking and panning for gold, tackling the high ropes at Camp Maranatha and watching performances by Sunshine Beach State High School.
Yet some of her most significant memories are of the teachers who encouraged her when reading was challenging and public speaking felt daunting. With their support, Summer found the confidence to step outside her comfort zone, present a speech at camp and eventually become vice-captain.
Today, she hopes to offer her own students that same encouragement: the chance to discover their strengths, build confidence and feel proud of what they can achieve.
Much has changed since Summer was a student, from weekly visits to the computer lab to the technology used in today's classrooms. But the importance of teachers who recognise a child's potential and encourage them to take the next step remains just as strong.
This is one of the things that makes state education so valuable. Every child deserves opportunities to learn, grow and discover what is possible, supported by people who believe in them. At SBSS, those relationships are an important part of what it means to be a connected school community.
Summer's story brings that full circle. The encouragement she received as a student now shapes the teacher she hopes to be for others.
Once a Sunshiner, always a Sunshiner!
