The Arts is comprised of five Learning Areas: Visual Art, Dance, Drama, Music and Media Arts. Classroom teachers deliver Visual Art lessons to their students, whilst the other subjects are covered in weekly specialist lessons of 40 minutes.
In The Arts specialist lessons, classes focus on one of the four learning areas for 10 weeks before moving onto the next learning area. This means that students are assessed The Arts each semester and Visual Arts once a year.
Each of the five Arts subjects involves the following elements:
- RESPONDING (analysing and evaluating artwork such as songs, dances, plays, advertisements, paintings etc.)
- CREATING (choreographing dance routines, composing songs, writing scripts, designing magazine pages, building sculptures etc.)
Dance, Drama and Music feature another element:
- PERFORMING (either a rehearsed piece of work or improvisation e.g. playing instruments, dancing, performing scenes/plays).
