The Australian Curriculum: Languages is designed to enable all students in Australia to learn a language in addition to English. It recognises that students bring diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to their learning, whether these involve English, the target language, or a combination of languages.

Further information is available via the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority:

At Sunshine Beach State School, Italian is taught as our Languages subject. In addition to learning with a native Italian speaker, Sunshiners have the opportunity to host an Italian Assistant for a full term during the year, further enhancing their linguistic and cultural understanding.

Students also participate in a range of Italian-focused incursions, including cooking classes, sessions with Italian chefs and full immersion days. Excursion opportunities may include visits to a local Italian restaurant, a walk to our local shopping precinct, or participation in the Sunshine Coast Speech Contest at Sunshine Coast University.

Through the Italian program, students learn to communicate by socialising, informing, creating, translating and reflecting in Italian. They also develop an understanding of how another language system works and how language and culture are interconnected.

Rationale (summary)

Languages enable communication in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world by engaging with the linguistic and cultural diversity of the world and its peoples.

Aims (summary)

Languages provide opportunities for students to understand themselves as communicators by using the target language and by developing an understanding of the relationship between language, culture, and learning.

Unit plans

Detailed unit plans aligned to the Australian Curriculum: Languages will be added to this page. These plans outline the learning focus, key content, and experiences for each year level and support a sequential and consistent approach to Italian across the school. Additional year levels and terms to be published as they are finalised.
