Last term, three of our enthusiastic Year 5 students represented Sunshine Beach State School at the annual Readers’ Cup Competition, hosted by Immanuel Lutheran College. This state wide event, run by the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia, brings together avid readers from schools across the region to test their knowledge of a set selection of novels.
This year’s booklist featured five engaging titles:
• The Kindness Project by Deb Abela
• Fearless Frederic by Felice Arena
• Silver Linings by Katrina Nannestad
• 11 Ruby Rd 1900 by Charlotte Barkla
• Scar Town by Tristan Bancks
Representing our school were Eva S and Alexandria S from 5B, and Romina M from 5R. The girls committed themselves to reading, discussing and preparing for the competition over several weeks. On the day, they joined 30 other teams from public, private and independent schools in a series of fast-paced quiz rounds. Although our team didn’t place, they performed wonderfully, demonstrating teamwork, resilience and a genuine love for reading.
Congratulations to our Year 5 team for their fantastic effort. Events like Readers’ Cup give students a wonderful opportunity to develop confidence, celebrate literature and connect with others who share their passion.
