Recently our Year 5 Readers’ Cup team competed in the 2026 Readers’ Cup Competition held at Immanuel Lutheran College in Buderim.
Readers’ Cup is organised by the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia and is a statewide competition designed to encourage young readers. Teams read a set of five books and then compete against other schools to answer quiz questions based on the texts.
This year’s competition featured approximately 30 schools from across the Sunshine Coast, with results closely contested and only small margins separating teams. Across Queensland, there were 911 registered teams, including 492 from Years 5/6, 246 from Years 7/8 and 172 from Years 9/10, with an estimated 4,363 readers and 17,888 books read.
The set texts for the competition were:
1. Childish by Morris Gleitzman (contemporary)
2. Soaring with the Sugarbird Lady by Dianne Wolfer (historical)
3. Spirit of the Crocodile by Aaron Fa’Aoso and Michelle Scott Tucker (First Nations / adventure)
4. Inked by Karen Wasson and Jake Minton (graphic novel / fantasy)
5. Down the Plot Hole by Annaleise Byrd (fantasy)
Our team included Billie J, Siena B, Maggie S (5CL), and Henley R and Archie H (5LS-H). They are to be congratulated on their teamwork, enthusiasm and commitment to the competition.
While the team did not place, congratulations to Pomona State School who were the overall winners.
Readers’ Cup aims to inspire a love of reading and give students the opportunity to engage with a wide range of texts. It was a valuable experience for our students to collaborate, extend their reading and connect with other students who share a passion for books.
