Year 3s learn the ABC of cycling

Year 3 and year 4 learners braved the cloudy skies and showers to enjoy a very engaging safety and skills building session with the instructors from Bike On.   The sessions were funded by a grant received by the P & C from the Department of Transport and Main Roads to be used towards cycle skills.  During the hands-on sessions the students learnt a number of key bike safety skills which they can now put to good use.  The sessions were a resounding success, with learners unanimously declaring that they didn’t know learning could be so much fun! Even reluctant participants came away smiling and feeling much more confident on their bikes.
The individual attention given to learners by the very experienced Bike On instructors made this a valuable experience for all involved. Children who had very limited previous experience on bicycles were beaming with the feeling of success by the end of the session.  Key skills taught included how to do a quick take-off response (straight line), cornering, obstacles (log, curb etc.), braking technique and optimal body positioning.
The sessions also included some road safety simulations including stop and give way signs and props to simulate practicing scanning safely for traffic whilst riding.  Learning to look ahead by balancing bean bags on their heads was a challenge!
