LEGO WeDo robotics


​This term a group of Year 3s have been working in our robotics workshop using LEGO WeDo, which is a robotics hardware and software platform specifically designed for junior primary students. It follows the 4 C’s process – Connect to a story, Construct a model, Contemplate its function, and Continue improving its design.

From simple drag and drop interfaces to developing more complex algorithms, students are encouraged to explore the world around them and develop their own ideas and theories, making science come to life through coding.

Through real-life STEM challenges and engaging physical and digital creation, WeDos enable students to develop computational thinking skills and transform them directly into programming solutions that interact with the real world.

For instance, some of the students have built floodgates to help prevent flooding as one of the guided projects. Another project was to build a model of a bee flying around a flower full of pollen. Students then have to share their findings about how pollinators can contribute to plant pollination.

Students are now working towards ‘open projects’ where they have to create and program a solution to solve the problem, for example to create an animal that could live in a particular habitat.

Students love the opportunity to work in small groups of three, use the iPads and get their WeDos to use sound, motion sensors and movement to create.
